Post-relocation Support and Interventions for refugees in Dzaleka

On May 17th, 2023, the Malawi Government initiated the forced relocation of refugees from cities and towns back to Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa. This exercise was marred by numerous human rights abuses against the refugees, including beatings, rape, extortion, and theft, among other atrocities from which the refugees have yet to recover. The relocation of refugees and asylum seekers to Dzaleka Refugee Camp has led to a dire humanitarian crisis, marked by severe hardship, insecurity, and a lack of essential services. One year on, we reflect on the lives of the refugees and asylum seekers who were forced to abandon their homes and income-generating activities and rely solely on humanitarian aid. Read more here.
