Inua Advocacy has submitted an appeal to the African Union (AU) Human Rights Commission, specifically addressing the AU Special Rapporteurs on Human Rights Defenders and on Refugees, regarding the unresolved human rights violations against refugees, asylum seekers, and refugee rights advocates in Malawi. Inua Advocacy has been directly targeted, facing harassment, bans, and threats that obstruct its ability to support refugee rights. The appeal also seeks AU intervention to halt further forced relocations of refugees and address Malawi’s violations, such as arbitrary detentions, sexual violence, extortion, and property confiscation against refugees—issues that Inua Advocacy previously reported in 2023 but are yet to be investigated. Additionally, the appeal highlights Malawi’s plans for another round of forced refugee relocations to Dzaleka Refugee Camp, a facility overcrowded with 56,000 people despite its capacity for 10,000, subjecting people to deplorable living conditions. Inua Advocacy calls for the AU to conduct an independent fact-finding mission, enforce legal reforms such as amending the 1989 Refugee Act; suspend forced relocations; and protect human rights defenders from reprisals.
