Bailed After Almost a Year Behind Bars

November has been a month of hope and renewal for Inua Advocacy having reunited a family torn apart by incarceration. After nearly a year in Dedza Prison, a 35-year-old Burundian refugee regained his freedom through our legal intervention. His ordeal began in February 2024 when he was imprisoned and had no legal representation. Desperate for help, his wife reached out to us in August 2024, and we immediately took up his case.

Recently, the Dedza Magistrate’s Court granted him bail, and he reunited with his wife and five children. Reflecting on his ordeal he said: “I have never been in conflict with the law before, and being held in prison was devastating. I had no hope of ever being freed.” His youngest child, just two months old when he was imprisoned, will soon be taking his first steps in a world where he is free. Awaiting his final judgement at the magistrate’s court, he looks forward to reviving his small commodity trade and effectively provide for his family again.

Paul on the recovery path

Paul, a young refugee featured in our November update, continues to recover well after being injured during the October 2024 Malawi Defense Force (MDF) raid on Dzaleka Camp. Shot three times in the foot, he suffered severe injuries that threatened his ability to ever walk again. In November, we accompanied his to two follow-up appointments at the Lilongwe Institute of Orthopedics and Neurosurgery (LION), both confirming steady healing progress. The most heartening news is that Paul can now walk independently and is eager to return to school. We covered his medical costs and essential food supplies to take his prescribed medication as required not on an empty stomach.

Support our Cause

It has been a challenging year for Inua Advocacy. The Government of Malawi has used every means to discourage our efforts, including blackmail; barring access to the camp; and dissuading donors from supporting our work. Despite these obstacles, we remain steadfast in our commitment to the fight for justice and dignity for refugees. Every donation keeps our doors open and brings hope to the vulnerable.
