Four Years of Impact

Four Years of Impact

On 27th April, Inua Advocacy marked four years of dedicated refugee advocacy in Malawi. Since our founding, we have made significant strides in advancing refugee rights, providing legal aid, emergency support, exposing corruption and human trafficking and campaigning for legislative reform.

Our impact over the last 4 years includes:

  • Supporting over 430 vulnerable refugees with food and financial support to help them survive displacement and economic hardship.
  • Providing meals to 1,042 refugees who were detained at Maula Prison during the 2023 forced refugee relocation.
  • Offering legal aid and securing the release of over 1,200 refugees facing various legal challenges.
  • Consistently exposing human trafficking networks operating in Dzaleka Refugee Camp.
  • Continued advocacy for the amendment of the 1989 Refugee Act which denies refugees the right to freedom of movement, formal employment, business ownership and access to public universities.

Policy Reform: Submission of a Position Paper to the Malawi Law Commission.

On 28 April 2025, we formally submitted a position paper to the Malawi Law Commission (MLC) as part of the national review of the 1989 Refugee Act. Titled “Recommendations for a Progressive Refugee Legal Framework in Malawi,” our submission calls for the repeal of the outdated Act and the enactment of new legislation that reflects Malawi’s 1994 Constitution and its international and regional obligations. The paper outlines critical gaps in the current law particularly its failure to safeguard refugee rights and proposes actionable reforms.

Key recommendations include:

  • Withdrawing Malawi’s nine reservations to the 1951 Refugee Convention
  • Ending mandatory encampment
  • Recognizing refugees as rights-holders entitled to work, move freely, and access public services

We commend the Law Commission for undertaking this long-overdue process and reaffirming its commitment to contributing to a more inclusive, rights-based refugee framework in Malawi.

Legal Victory in Dowa: Justice for Waseme and Alevi

On April 28, 2025, two of our clients, Waseme and Alevi, were granted bail after spending over a month in custody. Their release was made possible when our lawyer stepped in to provide the pro bono legal support they desperately needed. The smiles on their faces and the tears of joy from their loved ones in the courtroom reminded us why this work matters. We thank God’s Economy for its faithful investment in our legal work and for making these family reunions not only possible but lasting.

A Livelihood for Janate Mukaramanzi

Do you remember Luka Peter, whose story we shared in our March newsletter? After winning his court case and walking free, we met someone quietly carrying her own burden in the background, his mother, Janete Mukaramanzi.

Her story moved us deeply. A survivor of domestic abuse and now the sole provider for six children, Janet was left behind by her husband to carry the weight of an entire household on her own. Our team could not ignore her quiet resilience. After reflecting together, we decided to gift Janete a small start-up fund of $230 to help her launch a business and restore some stability to her family. Her response was pure joy. She tried to suppress her laughter, but it burst through—a moment of unfiltered happiness.

Janete told us she plans to use the funds to begin winter cropping, a sustainable step toward food security. “I will cultivate a few crops—some for sale and some to feed my family,” she said with hope in her voice. Please keep Janet in your prayers. May her efforts be rewarded with a generous harvest, and may this small seed of hope grow into something that eases the load she has carried for so long.

Thank You for Your Continued Support!

As we reflect on the progress and impact, we’ve made in the past four years, we also celebrate four years of people like you trusting us with your prayers and finances to bring about collective change that restores smiles, hope and human dignity. We are committed to advocating for and empowering refugees in Malawi and none of this would be possible without the dedication of our team, partners, and supporters.

We look forward to continuing this journey with you and creating lasting change together.
