An officer from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services in Lilongwe has been arrested for allegedly facilitating the release of 15 Ethiopian nationals into the hands of a suspected trafficker. However, this incident points to a troubling pattern of official involvement in human trafficking and migrant smuggling networks that continue to exploit Malawi’s position as a key transit route. We therefore call for a full, transparent, and independent investigation to ensure that all those responsible are held to account under the law. Inua Advocacy remains committed to supporting the government and its partners in efforts to end trafficking, uphold human dignity, and promote the rule of law and justice for all.
