Three Years On, Refugees Still Await Justice

Three years after the forced relocation of refugees and asylum seekers to Dzaleka Refugee Camp, many victims are still awaiting justice and accountability for human rights violations and economic losses suffered during the 2023 operation. The relocation worsened overcrowding and humanitarian conditions in the camp, while survivors continue to live with trauma linked to allegations of assault, rape, robbery, and property confiscation by the autorities. In this statement, we are calling for independent investigations, the release of outstanding auction proceeds owed to refugees, and the urgent reform of Malawi’s 1989 Refugee Act to advance more dignified and rights-based refugee policies.
