Addressing Security and Human Trafficking Challenges at Dzaleka Refugee Camp

The Commissioner for Refugees recently admitted the presence of firearms in Dzaleka Refugee Camp and the rising human trafficking activities that pose a threat to national security. He disclosed severe manpower shortages, with just one security officer and four guards managing a camp of approximately 56,000 refugees and asylum seekers, along with 15 police officers — far below the recommended ratio of 1 officer per 500 individuals. While the Commissioner’s acknowledgment of these challenges is a step in the right direction, recognition alone is insufficient. The traffickers continue to operate with minimal arrests or prosecutions despite being well-known and identifiable. Immediate action is required to dismantle trafficking networks and restore security in the camp. Inua Advocacy urges the Department for Refugees to prioritize the safety and dignity of refugees and to act decisively in holding traffickers accountable. The full statement is accessible here.
