Bridging the legal representation gap for refugees

Serah, a young mother from Dzaleka Refugee Camp, represents a powerful story of resilience and justice having endured constant abuse from her partner.

Despite interventions from both families, the abuse persisted, and her situation became increasingly dire.

He once threw their three-month-old baby into a laundry basket; and in another incident he violently pulled out her braids, causing her to lose a section of her hair.

Lacking the resources to seek legal help, Serah found herself trapped. It was only after her mother reported the case that Inua Advocacy stepped in.

We provided her with the legal representation, despite the path to justice being marred by numerous adjournments and delays at the Dowa Magistrate’s Court, stretching the case over several months.

Finally, on September 20, 2024, the court ruled in her favor, granting her a protection order and ordering compensation from her abusive partner.

This victory is more than just a legal success—it represents the restoration of Serah’s dignity and a step toward ensuring her safety. It also demonstrates our dedication to providing refugees like her, with a lifeline when they are most in need.

Studies show that domestic violence is the most prevalent form of violence against women and girls in Malawi, with the 2020 United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) survey revealing that 42 percent of women in Malawi have experienced physical violence from a partner at some point in their lives.

We take pride in being a beacon of hope for refugees in Malawi seeking justice but unable to afford legal services.Together with our partners, we are securing justice and ensuring a brighter future for them.

In September alone, our legal team supported nine refugees in four cases involving refugees, marking the huge challenges they face in navigating legal systems without resources or support.

Our work is about empowering refugees to live with dignity, free from abuse, discrimination, and injustice and ensuring that they have the support necessary to protect their rights.

We are able to achieve this life-changing impact because of the generous financial support of our donors.

Whether you are a long-time donor or considering contributing for the first time, your donations are the backbone of our efforts. Together, we can help countless refugees find justice, safety, and dignity.

We thank you sincerely for standing with us and encourage you to continue supporting refugees through our mission.

If you have not yet contributed, now is the perfect time to join us in making a lasting difference in the lives of those who need it most, as your help can truly change lives.
