Malawi’s contribution to Global Perspectives on Strengthening the Refugee Convention, a publication by the United States Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) marking the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, highlights ongoing efforts to strengthen refugee protection through legal reform, access to justice, and rights-based advocacy. It outlines advocacy to align Malawi’s refugee laws with the 1951 Refugee Convention, particularly by promoting refugees’ rights to work, engage in self-employment, and enjoy freedom of movement. The paper also documents barriers to justice following the 2023 forced relocation of refugees, including arbitrary detention, property loss, limited access to legal representation, and delays in obtaining effective remedies. Read our contribution, alongside those of advocates from around the world, in this report, published on 28 July to mark the 75th anniversary of the UN Refugee Convention.
